No Dragon We Cannot Slay
Hello there!
In cartography, unexplored land would often be left blank, hence the name white or blank spot. Sometimes, they would be marked with pictures of beasts writing: “Here be dragons!” While we now talk about pushing boundaries in a more than positive manner, when the bordering lands were unknown, clouded with mystery and legends, the fear of no return overwhelmed most of the bravest of men. Although we all have to go through the school of fear to overcome anxiety and grow wise, less bravery is required when we venture into the unknown parts of the landscape of ideas together!
Who were the explorers on whose shoulders we stand on? How and why did our ideas, methods, and cognitive tools develop? I want to look past the popular myths in academia and figure out how exactly we got so that we may find the right path forward.
